Raise Your Voice for a Better Michigan

The 2012 Elections are fast approaching and if we want to change WHAT is happening in Lansing, we need to change WHO is in Lansing. Use the link below to contribute to the AFT Michigan PAC fund. Performance-Based Funding and Michigan Universities

While many other states have tried and discarded performance-based funding, some are proposing it as a strategy to increase student success at our universities. AFT Michigan's more than 14,000 higher education members believe the legislature should prioritize restoring basic funding levels for our colleges and universities; completing development of a longitudinal PreK-post secondary student data system; and developing a framework for student success reporting for each campus and program based on benchmarking against similar institutions.

Do We Need More Cyber Charter Schools?

Senate Bill 619 (S-1), as passed the Senate and is currently before the House Education Committee. It seeks to expand enrollment in online learning for Michigan's children without regard for past success or sustainability. These Cyber schools would get the full foundation allowance with no oversight or accountability, and would not have to comply with the same transparency, curriculum, or grade level content standards. We oppose SB 619 and urge you to send an email to your legislators asking them to vote NO on the bill. Send a e-mail to your State Representative asking them to vote no on the bill to expand Cyber Charter Schools.

Back-Door Vouchers!

Senate Bills 622(S-5), 623(S-5), 709(S-3), and 710(S-3), as passed the Senate, are currently before the House Education Committee and will be in front of the full Michigan House soon. These bills would broaden the current guidelines for dual enrollment participation by amending the Postsecondary Enrollment Options Act and the Career and Technical Education Act. AFT Michigan supports dual enrollment for High School Students, but these bills have some serious flaws. These bills increase the drain on state revenues with home-schooled and private-school pupils accessing tuition free higher education paid for by tax-payers! We urge you to send an e-mail to your State Representative asking them to vote NO on these bills.

AFT Michigan Winter Classes

Tuesday Evenings in January, February and March AFT Michigan offers classes to help you develop the tools you need to be an effective union leader/member. They are open to everyone in the union, at no cost, and we encourage anyone who thinks of themselves as a "leader," wants to be a leader, could be a leader, or who just wants to better understand what a union does, to attend as many of them as you can.
Some of the classes, like Strategic Planning, are two part classes and the second class builds upon what was learned in the first class. Others you are welcome to attend a single class, or attend all eight sessions!
Classes are held every Tuesday, starting January 17th, from 5:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. at the AFT Michigan office in Detroit. A light dinner is provided. These classes do not qualify for SB-CEUs.
