Full-time lecturers at Eastern Michigan University used strategic picketing
at the UM-EMU football game on September 17 to win the settlement of their
second contract. Members, together with supporters from the tenure-track
faculty at EMU, distributed leaflets demonstrating how low a percentage of
student tuition goes to pay teachers for their instructional work. The new
contract, which terminates in April of 2010, includes a guarantee of no
employee contributions to health care premiums, more flexible requirements
for office hours, and a 9.2 percent wage increase over five years.
