The part-time faculty at Eastern Michigan University is looking to join the list of those with collective bargaining rights in 2010. On Dec. 9, 2009, the Adjunct Lecturers' Organizing Committee filed an accretion petition and membership cards to hold a recognition election for union representation by the Eastern Michigan University Federation of Teachers.
Also, the nontenure-track faculty members at Ferris State University have filed cards with the Michigan Employment Relations Commission for a union recognition election. The members of the Ferris Nontenure-Track Faculty Organization are fighting for equitable pay, job security, health insurance and professional development. Nontenure-track faculty at Ferris State University currently receive no healthcare benefits and are allowed only one sick day per semester.
