2007-2008 AFT Michigan Legislative Agenda

AFT Michigan will be pursuing a legislative agenda throughout the 2007-08 session that includes quality education, equitable funding, and employment conditions that honor employees. The Legislative Agenda is the result of an issue survey conducted of our membership and the issues speak to our members concerns about improving education.

Lobby Day Success!

Almost 200 members from 38 locals came to Lansing and spent the day learning about the state budget crisis and lobbying their legislators on a number of issues. After speaking with the legislators we came back together to record their responses. Some members are doing follow-up with members who didn't give a clear answer or wanted more information. Learn more about the specific legislation AFT Michigan members lobbied their legislators about.

Stop Privatization

Public Act 112, of 1994 put severe restrictions on our rights to bargain collectively the outsourcing of any "non-instructional" services. This has lead to the privatization of many public school employee jobs such as: bus drivers; food service workers; secretaries; custodians; and others. House Bill 4533 would place these jobs back on the table for collective bargaining. It has passed the House and now is before the Senate Education Committee. Please send a letter to your Senator urging him or her to vote YES on House bill 4533.
